How to Buy a Mint Issues Set and Other Collectible Coins

Mint sets are collections of valuable coins, usually in reference to U.S. collectables. The U.S. Mint actually releases a number of special mint sets every year. Sets (as well as individual coins) are released in proof and uncirculated editions. The difference is subtle but substantial. Proof sets tend to be shinier because they are from a higher quality of finish.

Proofs are created to serve as samples and have two styles of finish in the flat surface area of the coin; a mirror finish and a matt finish. Uncirculated coins are not circulated in public, meaning they are free from bag marks, edge knocks and other blemishes. The preference of most collectors is that proof coins are fine for display purposes, while uncirculated coins are ideal for storage or for decorations. Traditionally, proof sets are the most expensive type of coin.

Prestige proof sets are a popular buy. These sets were specifically made from a modern time period, specifically, the year 1983 to 1996. Prestige mint sets come in highly decorative holders and highlight commemorative pieces. Legacy sets are the newest generation of proof sets, released after 2005 and to today, and they come with a decorative folder.

Aside from Proof Silver Eagles and other silver proof sets affiliated with U.S. presidents, what are some other special issued sets worth collecting? The Botanic Gardens set is a popular release and set at a relatively low mintage of 25,000. This makes the Botanic Gardens a rare and thus very valuable set. There is also a set honoring Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, which is part of a 12-year program, which honors national parks throughout the country. Mint sets to follow include Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Yosemite National Park in California.

Why spend good money on an individual coin when you can get collectables in quantity with a mint set?
