Tips for Enjoying and Profiting in Paper Money Currency Collection

Paper money currency is a world apart from coin collection, and yet offers some of the same opportunities and joys for serious collectors. First, understand that when you collect currency values and paper money you have to love the hobby of collecting. Unlike gold and silver, there is no bullion content here. There is only collectable value (bills and notes of historical interest) current economic value (whatever a country’s money is currently worth) and sentimental or personal value.

If you are looking to start a collection of paper currency, go to the bank and find out what currency conversions are available. Many collectors enjoy collecting real foreign paper money, including a variety of notes that still have something in common. For example, you can choose a common denomination or a certain image. One popular trend today, in light of political struggles increasing, is collecting banknotes or currency from nations that are no longer in existence.

Here is a brilliant tip that is amazingly simple. Travel. Talk to people you meet and tell them that you collect foreign currency. You could even ask family members to bring you back some dollars. You might be surprised at how many people are willing to trade or even give you their country’s currency or large size notes. After all, how hard is it for you to part with your own money in US currency if someone asks nicely?

Paper money currency that has collectable value must be uncirculated and in near perfect condition. The bill must not be folded, ripped or crinkled. Nevertheless, if you enjoy collecting old paper money for values other than material, then don’t worry about the quality of the paper money. It’s the journey that counts.

What are some of the most popular collectables in old paper money? Any Hong Kong currency is always fascinating (and relatively easy to get if you know someone traveling on vacation), as is the 1935 One Dollar Bill Silver Cert, any 1914 German paper money currency and 1956 paper money. Paper money in U.S. states is also collectable, particularly $1, $2 and $20 U.S. bills from the 1800s and early 1900s.

Money issues aside, the value of old paper money is in the eye of the history-loving beholder.
